A new update from the denovali headquarter: the FIELD ROTATION - ACOUSTIC TALES 2xLP and REGENZEIT 10’’ arrived at the end of last week and all your preorders are already on the way. Thanks a lot for the nice feedback concerning this one. We’re already running low on the colored regenzeit copies and the 2 Acoustic Tales colored editions also sell pretty quickly. Today we’re starting the preorder for the new SANKT OTTEN album called GOTTES SYNTHESIZER. After the MORGEN WIEDER LUSTIG full length and the split with MAJEURE it’s the 3rd release of Sankt Otten via Denovali and they wrote a real ageless masterpiece. All of you who like acts like Neu!, Klaus Schulze, Brian Eno or Robert Fripp should be pleased by the sound Sankt Otten creates on this album - fans of newer acts like Zombi should be all ears too. SANKT OTTEN - GOTTES SYNTHESIZER Cd / 2xLP / MP3

The German instrumental duo SANKT OTTEN already teamed up for building the first walls of sound in 1999. Since then, they have released 4 albums and several eps together. In 2009, they joined DENOVALI RECORDS to realize their 4th full length MORGEN WIEDER LUSTIG, followed by a SPLIT record with MAJEURE - the solo project of A.E. PATERRA from ZOMBI (Relapse Records) - in 2010.

On the MAJEURE split they for the first time showed a more distinctive interest to the world of 70s and 80s synthesizers. The new album GOTTES SYNTHESIZER continues this voyage into the synth’s heaven. A paradise of warm analogue sounds, sequencer lines and electric drums garnished with the typical soaring guitar drones of OLIVER KLEMM as the central theme of the album.By adding ingredients reminding of the German pioneers of progressive electronic music, SANKT OTTEN are moving the KRAUTROCK elements into a new context.

With FAST NEU IST AUCH GEBRAUCHT the full length includes an hommage to the old KRAUTROCK heroes NEU! just as a ROBERT FRIPP influenced 13 minutes monster piece like the title track GOTTES SYNTHESIZER. Other songs (DIE WELT IST JA NICHT ZUM AUSHALTEN or ICH VERLASSE MICH SELBST) are rather influenced by STEPHAN OTTEN’s energetic electric drums. Mellow epic ambient hymns like WIR SIND DEINE PROPHETEN or DAS ENDE VOM LIED are their great tool to create a connection between specific soundscapes in order to make a coherent album out of the single tracks. The main excellence of this full length is that SANKT OTTEN are combining influences of an old genre with elements of today’s music to a new interesting mixture.

For the artwork of GOTTES SYNTHESIZER the spanish artist SALUSTIANO borrowed SANKT OTTEN some of his significant paintings. The art they’ve chosen together is a perfect effigy of SANKT OTTEN’s sound. The vinyl comes as a thick 180g gatefold version in 3 different colors - the cd in nice digipaks.

FIELD ROTATION - ACOUSTIC TALES 2xLP

Field Rotation was founded 2008 by the electronic music composer and producer Christoph Berg in Kiel, northern Germany. Experimenting with electronic and classical elements this project combines floating soundscapes with electroacoustic colours to create minimalistic soundtracks renouncing of visualisation but interacting with the listeners emotions and feelings. As a violinist and pianist Christoph combines the synthetic sound engineering with natural sounds to communicate his short acoustic tales and impressions. The limited CD Version (200 copies) of this record was already sold out during preorder.

CONTEMPORARY NOISE SEXTET: jazz music without jazz, film music without a movie, but something splendid instead. Despite the band’s name suggesting noisy music for the chosen ones, the Contemporary Noise Sextet appears to be a revelation for everyone. Beautiful piano tunes in the dialogue with a brass section, simple and extraordinary emotional compositions leading to a climax which makes the flesh creep while listening. The Contemporary Noise Sextet impress with maturity and class - there’s elegance as well as punk energy. The compositions are unbelievably spacious, but on the other hand all filled with instruments - ranging from a superb rhythm combo to a greatly equipped brass section. The roots of the most of ContemporaryNoise Sextet’s musicians reach harder music - thus it is not a surprise that their compositions are vigorous and expressive.

After 4 albums as a Quintet and Sextet (including a soundtrack done for a theatre play) they’re now back with their new full length - a bit more experimental than before, but still combining excellent melodies with the crazy brass and strings compositions. Their new album “Ghostwriter’s Joke” contains compositions which may be called a musical visualisation of / a commentary to life stories of particular people, both well-known & remembered by masses and unknown to anyone. These pieces of music were written in the honor of those people, who mostly wanted to stay anonymous. Some of them disappeared in unexplained circumstances and were not heard of anymore, but the music remained. There’s no doubt that the CONTEMPORARY NOISE SEXTET currently is one of the most fascinating musical projects from Poland which catches the attention of both pure jazz fans and people who are interested in experimental instrumental music in general.

As you might have recognized via the mailorder front page: we were on vacation for a week. All pending orders will leave on August 1st. Thanks a lot for your patience.

And we would directly like to start the August with 3 very nice new preorders. Since CELESTE are playing a good amount of shows till the end of the year, we’ve finally decided to repress their last full length MORTE(S) NEE(S) on vinyl - sorry that it took a while - money always limits us. We’re offering 150 copies in a nice new bone color and 450 copies on pure black.

Beyond that our Japanese heroes HEAVEN IN HER ARMS recorded new material. The brand new split 10’’ with their French friends AUSSITOT MORT features two new Heaven In Her Arms tracks and two from Aussitot Mort. In addition to that we’re releasing the great DUPLEX-COATED OBSTRUCTION record for the first time on vinyl - a 10’’ as well. Both records will be available as splattered color versions - the DUPLEX 10’’ also as a limited silkscreen cover edition. FOR THE FIRST TIME ON VINYL: Duplex Coated Obstruction (released in 2009) was the follow up record of HEAVEN IN HER ARMS debut album "Erosion of the Black Speckle”. It includes 4 songs with a total playing time of around 29 minutes. Heaven In Her Arms’ sound on this record is more melodic than on the 2nd full length "Paraselene” - but even with this a little bit different approach they’re able to create that dense epic mood which you can find on every record of this band. The guys, who play extremly convincing live shows, simply know how to play their instruments and how to write complex songs. All fans of sophisticated experimental hardcore should be all ears.

FINALLY REPRESSED! Three years after PESSIMISTE(S), two years after NIHILISTE(S), and one year after MISANTHROPE(S), there are still those red flickering lights, the fog and the mood of desperateness, in(s)aneness and darkness if you listen to this band. CELESTE are back with a new full lenght. In times where other metalbands copy their last full lenght or try to catch attention with a new producer for every new record CELESTE are just trying to extend their sound and the intensity with every new song. And they did it again. They again wrote a heavier, better, darker full lenght than the last time. SANKT OTTEN - GOTTES SYNTHESIZER CD / 2xLP

The German instrumental duo SANKT OTTEN already teamed up for building the first walls of sound in 1999. Since then, they have released 4 albums and several eps together. In 2009, they joined DENOVALI RECORDS to realize their 4th full length MORGEN WIEDER LUSTIG, followed by a SPLIT record with MAJEURE - the solo project of A.E. PATERRA from ZOMBI (Relapse Records) - in 2010.

On the MAJEURE split they for the first time showed a more distinctive interest to the world of 70s and 80s synthesizers. The new album GOTTES SYNTHESIZER continues this voyage into the synth’s heaven. A paradise of warm analogue sounds, sequencer lines and electric drums garnished with the typical soaring guitar drones of OLIVER KLEMM as the central theme of the album.By adding ingredients reminding of the German pioneers of progressive electronic music, SANKT OTTEN are moving the KRAUTROCK elements into a new context.

With FAST NEU IST AUCH GEBRAUCHT the full length includes an hommage to the old KRAUTROCK heroes NEU! just as a ROBERT FRIPP influenced 13 minutes monster piece like the title track GOTTES SYNTHESIZER. Other songs (DIE WELT IST JA NICHT ZUM AUSHALTEN or ICH VERLASSE MICH SELBST) are rather influenced by STEPHAN OTTEN’s energetic electric drums. Mellow epic ambient hymns like WIR SIND DEINE PROPHETEN or DAS ENDE VOM LIED are their great tool to create a connection between specific soundscapes in order to make a coherent album out of the single tracks. The main excellence of this full length is that SANKT OTTEN are combining influences of an old genre with elements of today’s music to a new interesting mixture.

For the artwork of GOTTES SYNTHESIZER the spanish artist SALUSTIANO borrowed SANKT OTTEN some of his significant paintings. The art they’ve chosen together is a perfect effigy of SANKT OTTEN’s sound. The vinyl comes as a thick 180g gatefold version in 3 different colors - the cd in nice digipaks.

This is maybe the most awaited (instrumental) metal record of the year. Founded in 2006, OMEGA MASSIF quickly seized the attention and interest of listeners from several genres (metal to doom to sludge to instrumental postrock) through the years - and that’s a result of just 2 records in 5 years: their demo KALT and the first full length GEISTERSTADT. OMEGA MASSIF are a convincing studio and live band. These aspects and the fact that they have a keen sense of sophisticated song structures are maybe the main reasons why OMEGA MASSIF filled bigger venues step by step - while having started with local squat, they have by now played festivals like ROADBURN, HELLFEST, SWINGFEST etc.!

Their new and 2nd album KARPATIA, a result of two years songwriting, again unites the well known calm melodic components with an immense dynamic and dark feeling in the monolithic heavy parts. In contrast to other instrumental bands, OMEGA MASSIF invent their own sound and are able to maintain the tension throughout the whole record without the usage of cheap climax ideas. We could continue to tell you how apocalyptic and intense this record is - but it’s maybe better to push the start button and to judge by your own if OMEGA MASSIF created another masterpiece after GEISTERSTADT.

BLUENECK - REPETITIONS CD / LP / MP3

In September 2011 Blueneck release Repetitions, their third album, on Denovali Records. The new LP is the follow-up to 2010’s The Fallen Host (“Stunning” - Rocksound, “Fantastic… an intoxicating, all-consuming experience” - Classic Rock: Prog, « Over time, I expect that this album will continue to be appealing, while many more glamorous and overhyped albums will disappear. » - The Silent Ballet) and 2006’s debut Scars of the Midwest. Though steeped in the trademark melancholy power of their former works, Repetitions resonates with new heights of emotional drama. From the butcher’s knife-edge tension of strident opener ‘Pneumothorax’, past the cocooned confessional ‘Barriers Down’, to the cathartic windswept Americana of ‘The Last Refuge’, Repetitions makes a deliberate lunge for the emotional jugular. It’s without doubt that this red-blooded output results from Repetitions’ unusual recording process. Whereas the first two albums were constructed in Blueneck’s reclusive studio deep in the farmlands of Somerset, this time the band made the deliberate decision to head to the city. Working with producer Mat Sampson in his Bink Bonk basement studios in Bristol, a recording session started that would eventually span an 18 month period, ending in June 2011. It wasn’t just the surroundings that needed to change. Contrary to their previous approach, this time Sampson encouraged Blueneck to minimise digital trickery. The band deliberately embraced analogue tools, acoustic instruments and live performances. Much of Repetitions is recorded live as a band using vintage amplifiers, pedals and microphones, a vast array of ancient analogue synths and organs, not to mention the addition of authentic live upright piano, violin and cello. Blueneck will follow the release of Repetitions with an extensive European tour throughout October and November 2011.

KODIAK are exploring limits. Even if their sound ranges from monolithic ultraheavy compositions to drone orientated experimental soundscapes, punctated used melodic riffing and guest appearances with strings or piano - that’s the common term to decribe their way of working. MOUNT FUJI DOOMJAZZ CORPORATION – SUCCUBUS 2x12’’ (limited screenprinted covers edition)

Seductive but perilous, he Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble’s new session under the Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation name is a new combination of drones and jazz. Creating sensual, murky and dark atmospheres, “Succubus” the evolution of this band, with stronger horns and a focus on hypnotic, soundtrack-like material. A deep, dark and yet seductive trip again for the corporation. After the corpses, the succubus. While rehearsing for their post “Mutations EP” shows, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble recorded a new improv session under their Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation moniker on the 15th of January 2009. Faithful to the original TKDE concept of drawing inspiration from movies, they recording what later became “Succubus” while watching Jess Franco’s film of the same name. This iconic 1969 movie, with its strong erotic mood, fragmented story line and oneiric photography encompasses perfectly the goal and means of TKDE / TMFJDC, in the way the band builds mesmerizing, deep and otherworldly atmospheres. More jazz-oriented than their heavier previous CD, “Succubus” leaves more room to Charlotte Cegarra’s vocals and Hilary Jeffery’s trombone, while the narrative is still led by Gideon Kiers (of Telco Systems)'s drums and Jason Kohnen (Bong-Ra)'s bass. Sensual, mysterious, pulsating and hazy, while “Succubus” is certainly not a new soundtrack to Jess Franco’s film, it is definitely something to be listened to in one take, and conveys the same feeling of displacement and lust. A new stone in the discography of the two headed entity that is TKDE / TMFDJC, “Succubus” displays the “corporation” in its most macabre yet entrancing side. Audio cinema has seldom sounded so lustful.

The new and 2nd album of Jason Köhnen’s (THE KILIMANJARO DARJAZZ ENSEMBLE / BONG RA) solo project. The term WHITE DARKNESS describes the entrancing force that comes over oneself, rising from the earth directly into one’s body, its whiteness a glory, and its darkness, terror. This effect depends on self-surrender and a degree of depersonalization, although an observing part of the ego is still present. White is sublimity, darkness is terror. They are unified at the climax of the trance. In this emptiness there is oblivion. An emptiness filled with powers that move in the most sublime fashion, entranced gods, divine dancing. The term WHITE DARKNESS is paradoxical, but paradox is often required to point to non-ordinary reality. The idea behind WHITE DARKNESS was to take the essence of Doom Metal (the funeral drums and melodic dirges) and place it into a futuristic and nihilistic background. Mainly using drums, electronics and piano – and, here and there, strings – Jason Köhnen creates music related to Metal, but puts everything in a totally new and different context. He already used extracts of the debut record NOTHING for parts of art performances and that’s exactly what comes to your mind when you’re starting to listen to TOKAGE. It could be the soundtrack for a nihilistic expressive play which doesn’t need any speech to catch your attention. TOKAGE is the heavy trip to your primal fear.

Today we would like to present you 2 brand new stunning records. On the one hand the actual full length of the canadian duo AUN called PHANTOM GHOST. It’s an innovative new mixture influenced by acts like Sonic Youth, Cocteau Twins, Troum, Boards Of Canada or Brian Eno. We’re offering a limited color vinyl edition of 150 copies on gold and 350 copies on black. On the other hand we’re proud to present you the 2nd work of BIRDS OF PASSAGE from New Zealand – before she will present her new album in December she now offers a collaboration record with LEONARDO ROSADO from Portugal. Mixed and mastered by NILS FRAHM. The limited color vinyl edition of this one consists of 100 copies on clear red w/ red splatters.

Secondly we’re really sorry that the people who preordered the OMEGA MASSIF hoodies still didn’t get their package. WHITE DARKNESS – TOKAGE Cd | 2x12’’ | MP3

The new and 2nd album of Jason Köhnen’s (THE KILIMANJARO DARJAZZ ENSEMBLE / BONG RA) solo project. The term WHITE DARKNESS describes the entrancing force that comes over oneself, rising from the earth directly into one’s body, its whiteness a glory, and its darkness, terror. This effect depends on self-surrender and a degree of depersonalization, although an observing part of the ego is still present. White is sublimity, darkness is terror. They are unified at the climax of the trance. In this emptiness there is oblivion. An emptiness filled with powers that move in the most sublime fashion, entranced gods, divine dancing. The term WHITE DARKNESS is paradoxical, but paradox is often required to point to non-ordinary reality. The idea behind WHITE DARKNESS was to take the essence of Doom Metal (the funeral drums and melodic dirges) and place it into a futuristic and nihilistic background. Mainly using drums, electronics and piano – and, here and there, strings – Jason Köhnen creates music related to Metal, but puts everything in a totally new and different context. He already used extracts of the debut record NOTHING for parts of art performances and that’s exactly what comes to your mind when you’re starting to listen to TOKAGE. It could be the soundtrack for a nihilistic expressive play which doesn’t need any speech to catch your attention. TOKAGE is the heavy trip to your primal fear.

after the sparse and minimalist collaboration \« Gerontology\ » with german sound artist Mirko Uhlig, the new N 2LP \« Carrissals\ » now joins both warm + dark drones with fieldrecordings found by basque artist Tzesne, causing a music, that seems to be drowned in a strange bright light, that is kind of dark at the same time… similar to my own concept of reflecting real places musically, Tzesne explores places via collecting fieldrecordings and treating those with postproduction… so maybe it is no surprise, that our ways crossed and we decided to work together. as with our personal work, \« Carrissals\ » joins music, artwork and track’s names to a picture of that certain place, located somewhere in spain.

THISQUIETARMY’s newest album RESURGENCE is arguably his most accessible and varied record since his debut album UNCONQUERED. It reveals another step forward into the extension of his signature shoegaze/drone-based compositions, incorporating many different elements of post-rock, post-punk, psychedelic, krautrock, industrial & doom. As a result, RESURGENCE is an eclectic blend of gauzy textures and rhythms, a fresh reconstruction of his unique musical style and personal influences, and an adventurous ride from one end of the drone spectrum to the other. RESURGENCE took 4 years to complete, in between THISQUIETARMY’s previous outputs which have mainly explored the dark ambient/doom-drone realm since the UNCONQUERED sessions. The bonus disc of the CD and the bonus tracks on the LP and 7’’ lay out the amount of compositions that have come through since then. The results can be described as dark, melodic, expansive & engaging dreamscapes. Guests on the album include: Meryem Yildiz (vocals) on the track ‹ Gone to the Unseen ›, Émilie Livernois-Desroches (violin) and Zena Virani (spoken words) appear respectively on the bonus tracks ‹ Ballad of a Shepherdess › and ‹ The Cold Vacancy ›. THE DALE COOPER QUARTET - METAMANOIR Cd | 2x12’’ | MP3

The bizarre Dark Jazz cabaret is opened again. Finally after years of waiting the 2nd full length of the sophisticated experimental collective from france. Feat. vocals of Gaelle Kerrien (YANN TIERSEN). All lovers of DAVID LYNCH movies, artists like KILIMANJARO DARKJAZZ ENSEMBLE or BOHREN UND DER CLUB OF GORE and blue cigarette smoke in dark bars will exult again. Métamanoir sees the band shift from their smooth, minimal and instrumental landscapes on the debut record Parole De Navarre to a more lively and rich sound. Always based upon improvisation and sound research, the solo parts of their music are now embodied by vocals. The Quartet invited several musicians and singers to record, giving a phantomatic sound with oboe, clarinet, whitewashed drones popping out of the songs. The sheer chants of Zalie Bellacicco - who appeared on the debut album - the deep tone of Ronan Mac Erlaine and the crystal-clear voice of Gaëlle Kerrien (Yann Tiersen’s singer on his last Mute album) interlaces with the still dark jazz of the band. Always influenced by classic 50s cool jazz and the more contemporary noise and experimental styles, the Quartet and his guests built a dreamy card castle who swing and grow deeply rooted in fierce strangeness of David Lynch movies. Métamanoir has been recorded in their native Britanny country, deep west of France, a land swept by climatic inconstancy fed by wind, rain and mystery. A place which gives the music an overwhelming but beautiful darkness.

The “Flight” EP, out on 7th November, is the second official single from Edinburgh based quartet Hidden Orchestra, who released their stunning debut album ‘Night Walks’ on Denovali Records and Tru Thoughts in September 2010, and have seen their star continue to rise in the intervening year with an ever-growing media and word-of-mouth buzz. Highly in demand as a live act, their hectic touring schedule this year alone has taken in over 20 countries as their incredible music has worked its way into hearts and minds the World over, and this single brings eagerly anticipated new material and remixes.

The quartet are formed around the duelling drum kits, percussion and electronic pads of drummers Tim Lane and Jamie Graham, and completed with the piano and violin of Poppy Ackroyd and the bass and samples of bandleader and composer Joe Acheson. The result is explosive, percussive, and resplendent with layers of intense soundscapes that take audiences on a deep and truly original sonic journey containing elements of jazz, classical, drum’n’bass, rock and hip hop, moulded into a coherent whole.
The lead track on this new EP, “Flight” is the first brand new material to be released since the album came out; “Flight” started out life as part of a live film soundtrack project, and evolved into this intense and transporting piece, which at almost eight minutes long sees composer and bandleader Joe Acheson exploring a dubby avenue, with a strong half-time feel running against a faster double-time context. Dotted rhythms in the kicks and snares and an occasional bass wobble interplay with acoustic basses and acoustic percussion including castanets, metal pipes, snare drums and ride cymbals. The jazz influence that often characterises Hidden Orchestra’s work is barely there, giving way to a very strong folk feel. Acheson expands: “This track is the strongest testimony yet to the last eleven years I have been living in Scotland - you can clearly hear the folk influence creeping into various aspects of the melodies, harmonies, and instrumentation.”

Harpist Mary Macmaster features heavily in the track, playing the clarsach - a traditional Scottish wire-strung harp. A legendary figure and a veteran of the live folk scene in Scotland, Mary has performed with Hidden Orchestra a number of times this year in special live shows where they have been able to augment their usual quartet with an extended line-up - including Glastonbury Festival, North Sea Jazz, Edinburgh Jazz Festival and Insider Festival. “Flight” also features the band’s two most regular live guest musicians reprising their appearances on ‘Night Walks’ - Su-a Lee (cello) and Fraser Fifield (low whistle and soprano sax) - and in addition plays host to a cameo appearance on clarinet from the celebrated Czech producer Tomáš Dvořák (aka Floex, who also created the remix of “Dust” for this release).

The single will be available on beautifully packaged 10” vinyl, care of Denovali Records, featuring “Dust (Floex Remix)” remix as the B-side. It will also be available as a limited edition pressing, including an extra disc featuring exclusive « no-drums » and « drums-only » versions of “Flight”. The unique idea for these alternate versions occurred to Acheson because the drums in Hidden Orchestra are such a feature that they stand up on their own; and conversely, splitting the track in this way also reveals all the layers of orchestration that can occasionally be lost underneath the thickness of the drum textures. The artwork for this single features one of Acheson’s favourite works by Norman Ackroyd, who also made the etching used for “Night Walks”.

Just a pretty short newsletter this time. Due to the big request concerning the OMEGA MASSIF - KARPATIA LP version we’ve decided to repress it directly. There are now another 500 copies available – 150x on ultraclear w/ black and green splatters and 350x on ultraclear vinyl. The records should be ready to ship in around 2 weeks. OMEGA MASSIF – KARPATIA LP (repress)

This is maybe the most awaited (instrumental) metal record of the year. Founded in 2006, OMEGA MASSIF quickly seized the attention and interest of listeners from several genres (metal to doom to sludge to instrumental postrock) through the years - and that’s a result of just 2 records in 5 years: their demo KALT and the first full length GEISTERSTADT. OMEGA MASSIF are a convincing studio and live band. These aspects and the fact that they have a keen sense of sophisticated song structures are maybe the main reasons why OMEGA MASSIF filled bigger venues step by step - while having started with local squat, they have by now played festivals like ROADBURN, HELLFEST, SWINGFEST etc.!

Their new and 2nd album KARPATIA, a result of two years songwriting, again unites the well known calm melodic components with an immense dynamic and dark feeling in the monolithic heavy parts. In contrast to other instrumental bands, OMEGA MASSIF invent their own sound and are able to maintain the tension throughout the whole record without the usage of cheap climax ideas. We could continue to tell you how apocalyptic and intense this record is - but it’s maybe better to push the start button and to judge by your own if OMEGA MASSIF created another masterpiece after GEISTERSTADT.

after the sparse and minimalist collaboration \« Gerontology\ » with german sound artist Mirko Uhlig, the new N 2LP \« Carrissals\ » now joins both warm + dark drones with fieldrecordings found by basque artist Tzesne, causing a music, that seems to be drowned in a strange bright light, that is kind of dark at the same time… similar to my own concept of reflecting real places musically, Tzesne explores places via collecting fieldrecordings and treating those with postproduction… so maybe it is no surprise, that our ways crossed and we decided to work together. as with our personal work, \« Carrissals\ » joins music, artwork and track’s names to a picture of that certain place, located somewhere in spain.

Always based upon improvisation and sound research, the solo parts of their music are now embodied by vocals. The Quartet invited several musicians and singers to record, giving a phantomatic sound with oboe, clarinet, whitewashed drones popping out of the songs. The sheer chants of Zalie Bellacicco - who appeared on the debut album - the deep tone of Ronan Mac Erlaine and the crystal-clear voice of Gaëlle Kerrien (Yann Tiersen’s singer on his last Mute album) interlaces with the still dark jazz of the band. Always influenced by classic 50s cool jazz and the more contemporary noise and experimental styles, the Quartet and his guests built a dreamy card castle who swing and grow deeply rooted in fierce strangeness of David Lynch movies. Métamanoir has been recorded in their native Britanny country, deep west of France, a land swept by climatic inconstancy fed by wind, rain and mystery. A place which gives the music an overwhelming but beautiful darkness.

The “Flight” EP, out on 7th November, is the second official single from Edinburgh based quartet Hidden Orchestra, who released their stunning debut album ‘Night Walks’ on Denovali Records and Tru Thoughts in September 2010, and have seen their star continue to rise in the intervening year with an ever-growing media and word-of-mouth buzz. Highly in demand as a live act, their hectic touring schedule this year alone has taken in over 20 countries as their incredible music has worked its way into hearts and minds the World over, and this single brings eagerly anticipated new material and remixes.

The quartet are formed around the duelling drum kits, percussion and electronic pads of drummers Tim Lane and Jamie Graham, and completed with the piano and violin of Poppy Ackroyd and the bass and samples of bandleader and composer Joe Acheson. The result is explosive, percussive, and resplendent with layers of intense soundscapes that take audiences on a deep and truly original sonic journey containing elements of jazz, classical, drum’n’bass, rock and hip hop, moulded into a coherent whole.
The lead track on this new EP, “Flight” is the first brand new material to be released since the album came out; “Flight” started out life as part of a live film soundtrack project, and evolved into this intense and transporting piece, which at almost eight minutes long sees composer and bandleader Joe Acheson exploring a dubby avenue, with a strong half-time feel running against a faster double-time context. Dotted rhythms in the kicks and snares and an occasional bass wobble interplay with acoustic basses and acoustic percussion including castanets, metal pipes, snare drums and ride cymbals. The jazz influence that often characterises Hidden Orchestra’s work is barely there, giving way to a very strong folk feel. Acheson expands: “This track is the strongest testimony yet to the last eleven years I have been living in Scotland - you can clearly hear the folk influence creeping into various aspects of the melodies, harmonies, and instrumentation.”

Harpist Mary Macmaster features heavily in the track, playing the clarsach - a traditional Scottish wire-strung harp. A legendary figure and a veteran of the live folk scene in Scotland, Mary has performed with Hidden Orchestra a number of times this year in special live shows where they have been able to augment their usual quartet with an extended line-up - including Glastonbury Festival, North Sea Jazz, Edinburgh Jazz Festival and Insider Festival. “Flight” also features the band’s two most regular live guest musicians reprising their appearances on ‘Night Walks’ - Su-a Lee (cello) and Fraser Fifield (low whistle and soprano sax) - and in addition plays host to a cameo appearance on clarinet from the celebrated Czech producer Tomáš Dvořák (aka Floex, who also created the remix of “Dust” for this release).

The single will be available on beautifully packaged 10” vinyl, care of Denovali Records, featuring “Dust (Floex Remix)” remix as the B-side. It will also be available as a limited edition pressing, including an extra disc featuring exclusive « no-drums » and « drums-only » versions of “Flight”. The unique idea for these alternate versions occurred to Acheson because the drums in Hidden Orchestra are such a feature that they stand up on their own; and conversely, splitting the track in this way also reveals all the layers of orchestration that can occasionally be lost underneath the thickness of the drum textures. The artwork for this single features one of Acheson’s favourite works by Norman Ackroyd, who also made the etching used for “Night Walks”.

OMEGA MASSIF – KARPATIA LP (repress)

This is maybe the most awaited (instrumental) metal record of the year. Founded in 2006, OMEGA MASSIF quickly seized the attention and interest of listeners from several genres (metal to doom to sludge to instrumental postrock) through the years - and that’s a result of just 2 records in 5 years: their demo KALT and the first full length GEISTERSTADT. OMEGA MASSIF are a convincing studio and live band. These aspects and the fact that they have a keen sense of sophisticated song structures are maybe the main reasons why OMEGA MASSIF filled bigger venues step by step - while having started with local squat, they have by now played festivals like ROADBURN, HELLFEST, SWINGFEST etc.!

Their new and 2nd album KARPATIA, a result of two years songwriting, again unites the well known calm melodic components with an immense dynamic and dark feeling in the monolithic heavy parts. In contrast to other instrumental bands, OMEGA MASSIF invent their own sound and are able to maintain the tension throughout the whole record without the usage of cheap climax ideas. We could continue to tell you how apocalyptic and intense this record is - but it’s maybe better to push the start button and to judge by your own if OMEGA MASSIF created another masterpiece after GEISTERSTADT.
