DENOVALI SWINGFEST NEWS: We’ve already announced it some days ago - there will be a nice TOUCH anniversary special on day one of the festival. Beyond ACHIM MOHNÉ (GER) the wonderful legend PHILIP JECK (UK) will present his compositions created with record players and samples. Additionally the Touch owner MIKE HARDING[/b] will showcase a lecture and will interview Philip Jeck. More news soonish.

Four years later he’s back with his long awaited 2nd album called « II ». After turning Bersarin Quartett with 2 befriended guest musicians into a band project in 2011 and some successful and interesting live experiences in several countries it was time to bring the fragments of songwriting of the past years together to a new 13 tracks journey. Someone mentioned 4 years ago « This music could be written on a lonely island or onboard of a spaceship looking on our planet. Time becomes a new unit and feelings become more weight. » That’s exactly the feeling Bersarin Quartett still conveys in 2012. THE SAMUEL JACKSON 5 - s/t Cd | LP | MP3

The long awaited fourth album by THE SAMUEL JACKSON FIVE from Norway. Having set a high standard with all previous efforts, the new album shows the band from quite a different side. Let’s skip to the main new addition right away: Yes, the album has vocals! Truls Heggero (of Lukestar fame) and Pål Angelskår (Minor Majority) - both Norwegian Grammy winners - contribute on one song each on the record, the same does Thomas Bratlie from post-hardcore rockers Rumble in Rhodos, on the aptly titled « Electric Crayons ». New addition to the band, Jonny « the Captain » Knutsen also does vocal chores, while the recording process has been carefully overlooked by multi-instrumentalist Thomas Meidell. While SJ5’s last effort, « Goodbye Melody Mountain » (2008) was recorded in the wilderness, the brand new album was put together in the middle of Oslo, and includes urban soundtracks like « Москва́ (Moscow) » (written in the Russian capitol and features noise from Berlin at night). The band further tries to distance themselves from their post-rock roots, delivering a thoughtfully arranged set of songs - only two of them clocking in at over 5 minutes. There are more traces of JAGA JAZZIST, ARCADE FIRE, YES or even English folk, than Mogwai or GYBE!. There are even influences of the proud Scandinavian piano jazz tradition of JAN JOHANSSON or ESBJÖRN SVENSSON. The 40+ minutes will definitely give these Norwegians a bunch of new followers, while challenging the devoted fan base.

After previously just being part of a sold out limited Vinyl Collection Box the 2005 classic output « Easily Misunderstood » of the SAMUEL JACKSON 5 now (just in time for the new album « They should Have Kept Their Mouth Shut ») sees the light of day again on vinyl. « It took a few listens to really learn to enjoy the music of the samuel jackson five. I certainly wouldn’t label it immediately accessible. It’s too sophisticated, too subtle, too smart for that. But give it the time and attention it deserves, and I guarantee that you will reap the rewards. For one of the few bands that doesn’t throw their toys out of the pram when labelled aspost rock, The Samuel Jackson Five are changing the way people hear and look at the genre, and not just their last record Goodbye Melody Mountain is enough evidence for me to elect them as the band to lead the genre forward. » For all fans of jazzy, instrumental postrock tunes.

The new follow up EP of AUN’s 2011 masterpiece album Phantom Ghost. The title and track names of this new AUN three track EP, contain some clues as to the frame of mind, and maybe some hints of the influences of its creators. As fans have now come to expect, ‹ Full Circle › is again a different sonic adventure, but still unmistakably AUN stamped. On the A side we find the fittingly titled 'Return to Jupiter Jazz, a Dumais solo piece, while the B side is a more joint affair, with the slow melancholic guitar and keyboard interplay of ‹ Floodland › and a first track featuring AUN in trio formation, with Frédéric Arbour adding some synth and guitar work to the lush and sprawling ‹ Family Man ›, a track which also finds some subtle lead guitar work by family friend Eric Quach of THISQUIETARMY fame.

Hello everyone.

We’re back with two new releases: one by a denovali rookie: SAFFRONKEIRA from Italy - and one by the denovali doyens / dinosaurs / grandfathers: SANKT OTTEN.

SAFFRONKEIRA is the Italian sound artists Eugenio Cara - with this project he lives out his passion of being a researcher of the possibility of expression offered by currently available technology. His debut is a 2 track 10’’ (which is limited to 350 copies and won’t be repressed) - in July will follow his first album called ‹ ‹ A New Life › › as a 2xCd and on two different 2xLPs. SANKT OTTEN - SEQUENCER LIEBE [CD|LP|DIGITAL]

SANKT OTTEN is a German instrumental duo which already teamed up for building the first walls of sound in 1999. So far they have released 5 albums and several Eps. They joined Denovali Records in 2009. For fans of KLAUS SCHULZE, ZOMBI, ROBERT FRIPP, KRAFTWERK or KRAUTROCK in general. In 2010 Denovali have released a split record with MAJEURE, the solo project of A.E. PATERRA from ZOMBI (Relapse Records). On this album SANKT OTTEN for the first time showed a more distinctive interest in the world of vintage synthesizers. Their 2011 album GOTTES SYNTHESIZER continued this voyage into the synth’s heaven and was very well accepted by the critic. SEQUENCER LIEBE (“Sequencer Love“) leads into a paradise of warm analogue sounds garnished with the typical soaring guitar drones of Oliver Klemm, while the band’s mastermind Stephan Otten flavoured these ingredients with his 80s electronic drum sounds. For the first time he used synthetic sounds and percussions for this album exclusively. Sequencer lines that may remind one of German pioneers of progressive electronic music are the red thread of this release - but SANKT OTTEN are moving the Krautrock elements into a new context. The title track « Sequenzer Liebe » is the best example for this approach. On the other hand the band offers ambient tracks like « Mir bricht die Stimme weg » or « Die Stadt riecht nach dir ». Both of these epic tracks are dominated by great synthesizer soundscapes and e-bow guitar sounds which give you goose bumps easily. Finally, titles like « Kann denn Liebe Synthie sein » and « Gestern Fand Ich Alte Traenen » show that SANKT OTTEN’s talent for little Synthpop hymns that could come right from the 80s. Altogether, the main achievement of their 6th full length is that SANKT OTTEN are combining influences of old genres with elements of today’s music to a unique and timeless mixture.

The spanish artist SALUSTIANO again borrowed SANKT OTTEN some of his great paintings for the artwork, this time from this lastest BLACK collection. These black paintings constitute part two of a cooperation trilogy which began with the red artwork of GOTTES SYNTHESIZER. The perfect synergy with SANKT OTTEN’s unique sound.

SaffronKeira is a project established in 2008 by Eugenio Caria from the island of Sardinia, Italy. After his contribution to the live series of the Experimental Electronic Music and Visual Arts Festival “Störung”, and a remix on Charles-Eric Charrier’s “Silver” album (Experimedia Records), the forthcoming self-titled 10’’ / digital release of SaffronKeira constitutes the first standalone release of this project which at the same time serves as an appetiser to the forthcoming debut concept album “A New Life”. With SaffronKeira, Eugenio Cara lives out his passion of being a researcher of the possibility of expression offered by currently available technology. Indeed, in his tracks he experiments a lot with electronics and unconventional elements, which sometimes seem meaningless at first sight, but uncover their significance only on a closer examination. Combining subtle and sometimes even almost invisible rhythms with textures of sound he confidently moves between minimalistic pieces and classic ambient tracks which should please both the analytic ears and the listeners who just want to dive into the music. This self-titled release starts of with “Endless agony of being sick”, where space-filling melodies, hollow drums and minimal female vocals are combined into something which can be simply called “epic” without doubt. The second piece, “Requiem for a dream”, starts off rather abstracly, slowling building up an eerie atmosphere with myriads of sound bits, before finally a reduced piano clears up the picture and takes the listener by storm. For fans of FENNESZ, ALVA NOTO, MURCOF, MAX RICHTER, ARVO PART, etc.

THE PIRATE SHIP QUINTET – ROPE FOR NO-HOPERS CD | 2xLP | MP3

Five years after their début EP was released to critical acclaim, The Pirate Ship Quintet have recorded their first full length album entitled ‘Rope for No-Hopers’, to be pressed courtesy of Denovali Records. The record is a compendium of pieces chosen and refined from an abundance written over the past few years, during which time the band disappeared from the live scene.

The five tracks on this record move through the richly melodic foundations of contemporary classical and minimalist rock. The swelling dark atmospherics give way to moments of brute force, punctuated by low level, desperate vocals. It is a little heavier and more technically diverse than the debut E.P and feels like a considered and organic evolution of the band’s method. The band’s fantastically talented cellist, who has played with the likes of The London Symphony Orchestra among others, recently accepted a full-time position with the National Orchestra of Wales which is based very close to the band’s home town. With all members of the group living in the same part of the UK once more and with their own small studio in the heart of Bristol they will be writing, recording and performing consistently again. The name of the new album evokes both solemnity and catharsis, while the track titles are references to abstract ideas and in-jokes, products of the bands notoriously dark sense of humour. ‘Horse Manifesto’ for example details the imagined uprising of an equine regime, bent on recompense for man’s inhumane exploitation of their kind. The record was written, performed, recorded and mixed by the band. More than ten locations were used in the recording stages including a old chapel on the banks of the River Seven, a furniture-making workshop, the offices of The Big Issue magazine and the band’s current studio space. It has been mastered by Cult Of Luna drummer Magnus Lindberg in Umeå Sweden with mountains of beautiful analogue equipment. The Pirate Ship Quintet, in its current arrangement, consists of Ziapour (bass guitar), Jona (drums), Alex (guitar), Alphie (guitar), Sandy (cello), Moo (trumpet) and Terrence (vocals). The artwork for the record was created by Lucy Joy and Jona Sturgess.

THE PIRATE SHIP QUINTET – S/T Cd | 12’’ | MP3

The Pirate Ship Quintet’s self-titled debut E.P was first released in 2007 and quickly acquired a certain chic status among the niche circles of the U.K and European post-rock scene. It’s very limited print run (only 200 LPs and 500 Cds) sold out rapidly and until now has never been repressed. The record was recorded and mixed by the band and mastered by CULT OF LUNA drummer, Magnus Lindberg following the two bands sharing a stage and becoming allies. The E.P has placed extremely highly among countless ‘best of’ lists and has received honourable mentions from some of the most respected critics on the post-rock scene. Its exceedingly favourable reception, despite the absence of any promotion at all, is testament to the record’s substance. Soon after The Pirate Ship Quintet played its first U.K tour, the band disappeared from the live scene, only making music for personal pleasure, seldom appearing on stage and formally releasing none of the material they wrote. At the start of 2012 the band’s phenomenally talented cellist, who has played with the likes of The London Symphony Orchestra among others, accepted a full-time position with the National Orchestra of Wales which is based very close to the band’s home town. With all members of the group living in the same part of the UK once more and with their own small studio in the heart of Bristol they made the decision to return to functioning as a working band again. Their first full length album entitled « Rope for No-Hopers » is released through Denovali Records in spring 2012.

Hello everyone.

Today we’re starting the preorder for our only new June release - the fantastic CARLOS CIPA - THE MONARCH AND THE VICEROY debut album. It will as always be available on cd, vinyl and promptly via download.

Carlos Cipa is a 22 year old composer/musician residing in Munich (Germany). Influenced by Eric Satie and Claude Debussy his piano music impresses particularly because of its intensity and great attention to detail. CARLOS CIPA - THE MONARCH AND THE VICEROY CD | LP | DIGITAL

Carlos Cipa is a 22 year old composer/musician residing in Munich (Germany). Carlos discovered his passion for music very early in his life. At the age of 6 he began taking classical piano lessons with various renowned teachers. Ten years later after he started playing drums he became more and more interested in composition and improvisation. In the following years he made lots of experiences in many music styles like jazz, hardcore/punk, indie rock and orchestral music. Influenced by ERIC SATIE and CLAUDE DEBUSSY his piano music impresses particularly because of its intensity and great attention to detail. It’s not only enhanced by his classical background and symphonic film music works, but also by the experiences he made as drummer in different bands. Besides the piano he is interested in all different kinds of instruments, as experimenting takes an important role in his work. Not playing just traditional concert rooms Carlos so far shared the stage with marvelous acts like MORITZ VON OSWALD TRIO, MURCOF, KAMMERFLIMMER KOLLEKTIEF, A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN, RIVULETS, THIS WILL DESTROY YOU or LIBRARY TAPES. After he finished his works on final versions of his compositions Carlos Cipa joined the German experimental music label Denovali Records early 2012. His debut full length « The Monarch and the Viceroy » now sees the light of day.

SAFFRONKEIRA - A NEW LIFE [2xCD|2x2xLP|DIGITAL]

SaffronKeira is a project established in 2008 by Eugenio Caria from the island of Sardinia, Italy. After his contribution to the live series of the Experimental Electronic Music and Visual Arts Festival “Störung”, a remix on Charles-Eric Charrier’s “Silver” album (Experimedia Records), and a self-titled 10’’ / digital release on Denovali Records, the debut concept album of SaffronKeira called “A New Life” will finally see the light of the Day in July 2012.

With SaffronKeira, Eugenio Caria lives out his passion of being a researcher of the possibility of expression offered by currently available technology. Indeed, in his tracks he experiments a lot with electronics and unconventional elements, which sometimes seem meaningless at first sight, but uncover their significance only on a closer examination. Combining subtle and sometimes even almost invisible rhythms with textures of sound he confidently moves between minimalistic pieces and classic ambient tracks which should please both the analytic ears and the listeners who just want to dive into the music.

Often, SaffronKeira’s tracks start off rather abstracly, slowling building up an eerie atmosphere with myriads of sound bits, before finally a reduced piano clears up the picture and takes the listener by storm. A highlight of this album is the last song, “Endless agony of being sick”, where space-filling melodies, hollow drums and minimal female vocals are combined into something which can be simply called “epic” without doubt.

Conceptually, “A New Life” is split in two complementary halves termed “Old Life” and “New Life”. This concept is extended by the artwork, which is kept purely in black and white and easily manages to complement SaffronKeira’s sound works in a pictorial fashion.

“A New Life” will be released as a double Cd containing both “Old Life” and “New Life” and two double 12’’ vinyl albums, containing “Old Life” and “New Life” separately.

Comprising of Christoph Clöser (Bohren & der Club of Gore / saxophone), Tycho Schottelius (Desmond Denker / synthesizer), Thomas Mahmoud (Tannhäuser Sterben & das Tod / field beats, effects & vocals) & Gerald Mandl (Tannhäuser Sterben & das Tod / bass, effects & moodswinger), The Nest have created their own blend of electronic sounds, jazz and noise across various improvisational sessions recorded live in Cologne in 2011.

Music for Drivers is a 62 minute long entity which is driven by the contrast between the organic and the mechanical, between the organized and the shredded. The mostly minimalistic sounds of The Nest manage to keep a fragile balance between an eerie atmosphere and a very subtle and peculiar humor.

These debut recordings are now available as their debut full length album on Denovali Records in 2012.

After our little European summer break we’re now back with four nice new releases of two new denovali artists and a couple of further updates.

NEW RELEASES
Before we’re putting out the new TALVIHORROS album in fall we’re now offering his first two albums for the first time on vinyl. Both limited to 350 pieces and with a stunning reversed side printed gatefold design.

The second package we’re presenting you this month features two records of the New York based composer Mario Diaz De Leon. Released on Cd under his real name earlier this year the album ‹ ‹ Hynos › › now sees the light of day as a 2xLP under the name ONEIROGEN. Steve Smith of the New York Times praised the disc for its "hallucinatory intensity’’. In line with Hypnos we’re directly offering the second Oneirogen output - a fantastix three tracks 12’’ called Veni Nox Amina. Oneirogen will perform for the first time in europe at the DENOVALI SWINGFEST on October 6th in Essen (Germany).

den141 TALVIHORROS - SOME AMBULANCE 12’’ | MP3

‹ ‹ Some Ambulance › › should be the first port of call for those with even a passing interest in where electro-acoustic and ambient music is heading in 2009/10, while I can imagine the uninitiated finding lots to love too. There’s a strong STEVE REICH influence prevalent here, especially the skillful use of slide-rule repetition, particularly found on ‹ ‹ The Blue Cathedral › and ‹ ‹ Etude IV › ›. But other tracks take different routes, ‹ ‹ Death of a Dream › › paints a bleak MORRICONE-esque picture with its forlorn guitar and solemn atmosphere created using a vibrant tapestry of sounds as its backdrop. While ‹ ‹ A Rural Place › › contains a staggered synth-rythmn and discordant effects that reminds me of something THOM YORKE might come up with in his solo ventures. My favourite composition comes in the form of haunting opener ‹ ‹ Handwriting (Part 1) › › (and indeed it’s closing part which ends this release) mainly down to the fact I can detect a strong Labradford influence from the way it builds from its grainy beginnings into a vast melancholic dronescape flickered with static and tape hiss. The effect of the whole piece is somewhat gratifying and I can’t help but recall the first time I heard Nelson and co’s seminal ‹ ‹ Praizision › › I’ve found myself going back to this record time and time again. It’s endlessly listenable and it packs a surprise with each spin. A bit like Rudi Arapahoe’s 2008 record ‹ ‹ Echoes From One To Another › ›, Talvihorros › release has come from nowhere and knocked me sideways. « With '‹ Music in Four Movements › I set out to compose four long pieces of music that would act as suites rather than shorter melodic songs as I had done on my previous record '‹ Some Ambulance ›. Using longer time frames afforded the sounds time and space with which to evolve and move. This has led to what could be labelled as my most ambient work i have released but I think also the most intense. Throughout the recording process I became interested in the fundamental ideas of life and death and why people would choose to take their own lives, (reading '‹ The Road › on a day long train back to London from Scotland, hungover after New Year certainly contributed to this). Slowly a narrative presented itself and the 4 tracks started to represent a journey of the final days of someone who has chosen to end everything. I became particularly interested in reading stories about people who drowned themselves in rivers or the sea - a bleak yet strangely beautiful image of someone walking their final walk into the sea became a strong visual influence for the record. » For fans of BARN OWL, TIM HECKER and dense dark sound collages in general.

ONEIROGEN is Mario Diaz de Leon, a composer and multi-instrumentalist residing in NYC. ‹ ‹ Hypnotic walls of shimmering sound › › perhaps describe his aesthetic most broadly, whether his medium is electric guitar, electronics, or acoustic instruments. His influences include modern composition, underground metal, and noise electronics. '‹ Hypnos ›'finds Diaz de Leon focused on his style of hallucinatory music. Far from being a follow up to 2009°‰s ‹ ‹ Enter Houses Of › › (a genre defying album of new classical works), ‹ ‹ Hypnos › › is a new direction, merging ethereal synths, brutal distortion, noise, and dark ambient. The album takes its title from the Greek god of sleep (also closely associated with night, death, and dreams), and the music itself is an eerie descent into the otherwordly, recasting familiar elements in a revelatory new light.

On the opening and closing tracks, hyper fast synth tones create a rushing, cathedral -like atmosphere. Tracks such as ‹ ‹ Consumed › ›, ‹ ‹ Hypnocaust › ›, and ‹ ‹ Kukulkan › › feature psychedelic, crushing distortion as their primary focus, taking influence from doom metal, black metal, power electronics, new age, and horror soundtracks. ‹ ‹ Cinerum › › and ‹ ‹ Faithless › › are highly structured takes on dark ambient, bringing the listener into haunting, strikingly beautiful realms of isolation, bleakness, and saturated noise textures.

A debut album of Diaz de Leon’s works for acoustic instruments and electronics, ‹ ‹ Enter Houses Of › › was released on John Zorn’s Tzadik label in 2009. The disc received international acclaim from publications including Impose Magazine, The Chicago Reader, New Music Box, Pepper Zone (France), Touching Extremes (Italy), and The Bangkok Post. Time Out New York included included it in their ''Best of 2009°Â list; ‹ ‹ A startling new compositional voice exploded out of this disc, with wistful melodies haunting an abrasive mix of modernist integrity and anarchic noise. › › Steve Smith of the New York Times praised the disc for its ''hallucinatory intensity".

Further down the apocalyptic tunnel initiated on the LP « Hypnos », these 3 tracks of dark illumination from Oneirogen (aka Mario Diaz de Leon) were composed as a counterpart to the full length. We find again his characteristic synth and noise used to harrowing effect, full of dramatic textural shifts, while bringing the metallic guitar and voice more to the forefront. Like Hypnos, the overall structure evokes a narrative, suggesting a descent into a hallucinogenic abyss, followed by a requiem-like emergence.

Jazz music without jazz, film music without a movie, but something splendid instead. Despite the band’s name suggesting noisy music for the chosen ones, the Contemporary Noise Sextet appears to be a revelation for everyone. Beautiful piano tunes in the dialogue with a brass section, simple and extraordinary emotional compositions leading to a climax which makes the flesh creep while listening. The Contemporary Noise Sextet impress with maturity and class - there’s elegance as well as punk energy. The compositions are unbelievably spacious, but on the other hand all filled with instruments – ranging from a superb rhythm combo to a greatly equipped brass section. The roots of the most of ContemporaryNoise Sextet’s musicians reach harder music – thus it is not a surprise that their compositions are vigorous and expressive.

There’s no doubt that the CONTEMPORARY NOISE SEXTET currently is one of the most fascinating musical projects from Poland which catches the attention of both pure jazz fans and people who are interested in experimental instrumental music in general.

Further works of Thomas with Denovali will follow later this year on Cd and vinyl. Archipelago is the 2nd album of Edinburgh-based HIDDEN ORCHESTRA, who combine two live drummers, organic samples and dubby basslines to make cinematic, emotive, percussive music. ‘Archipelago’, out 1st October on vinyl via Denovali Records (Cd via Tru Thoughts), is the second album from Hidden Orchestra, who were recently highlighted by the Independent On Sunday as one of their ‘Sounds Of The Summer’ 2012. Following the release of their debut, ‘Night Walks’, their intricate yet viscerally emotive and energetic sound has won them critical acclaim and a diverse fanbase, from bass and hip hop heads to jazz and classical aficionados to rock fans.

The core quartet of Hidden Orchestra is formed around the duelling drum kits, percussion and electronic pads of two drummers, Tim Lane and Jamie Graham, completed by Poppy Ackroyd’s distinctive, multi-faceted violin and piano playing and Joe Acheson’s bass and original samples. Hidden Orchestra have seen their star rise steadily and emphatically since the release of their debut, with an organic buzz building as they have toured their highly in-demand live show almost non-stop through over 20 countries, in addition to tour support stints for the likes of Bonobo.

‘Archipelago’ sees Acheson, the musical mastermind behind the talented Edinburgh four-piece, continuing to explore and develop many themes that emerged on their debut, adding new ideas, guest players, instruments and found sounds; to name a few, listen up for tap-dancing, bagpipe drones, and Acheson stomping in snow and ice.

One track from ‘Archipelago’ made its way out of the studio on an EP last November: “Flight” (which has notched up 700,000 Soundcloud plays) gained heavy BBC 6Music play from Cerys Matthews (who also invited the band for a live session) and Huey Morgan, as well as Jamie Cullum (BBC R2), Gilles Peterson (then BBC R1), Late Junction (BBC R3), John Kennedy (XFM) and more. The eagle-eared may also have spotted the burgeoning new material in Acheson’s mixtapes – a series of elaborate studio creations giving an insight into his eclectic influences and singular musical sensibility, each gaining tens of thousands of hits. The first official single from ‘Archipelago’ will be the double A-side “Vorka”/”Spoken”, to be released on 10th September, with “Vorka” premiered on The Line Of Best Fit on 18th July.

New instruments contributing to the many layers of ‘Archipelago’ include the musical saw of multi-skilled cellist Su-a Lee (as heard to spine-tingling, sci-fi effect on “Vorka”); clarsach and electro-harp from Scottish folk musician Mary MacMaster; clarinet care of Czech musician/composer Floex; and Phil Cardwell’s uniquely versatile trumpet tones. In addition, you’ll hear a range of kantele and zithers which Acheson (also a Sony-nominated radio producer and presenter) found and recorded at a school for the blind in Finland, while on location for a radio documentary.

In sampling found sounds and inspired improvisation, alongside his skills as a composer, Acheson instils in the music of Hidden Orchestra an anchor to its earthly environment, while often conjuring an ethereal atmosphere and fragility that can whisk the listener off to another world; there are moments of feeling suspended somewhere in between. Just as the first album evoked, in Acheson’s words, “the brooding reflections of a solitary walk through the still, restless night”, ‘Archipelago’ takes us on “a voyage around a group of islands - built from the same materials but each with its own character, its particular arrangement of rocks, shoreline, flora and fauna – amid seas and skies which are forever changing”. Acheson captured bird and wave sounds on a boat and ashore on the tiny remote Scottish island North Rona, when he and Poppy accompanied her father, the artist Norman Ackroyd, on a trip to gather sketches for his etchings - including the one of nearby island Roaireim, which they used on the album cover.

Recent high points for Hidden Orchestra include performing on the West Holts stage at Glastonbury 2011 with a special ten-piece line-up; selling out their biggest London headline yet; and playing their first shows in Africa and Scandinavia. But for Acheson, who toiled for many years to see the first album come to fruition, there have been no lows, just excitement and awe that his intense, drawn out labours - “practically living in the studio, eating porridge and soup, never getting to go anywhere” - have begun to bear fruit. Hidden Orchestra now have a busy festival season ahead before setting off to tour the ‘Archipelago’ album in earnest in Autumn.

THOMAS KÖNER - NOVAYA ZEMLYA 2xLP

The artwork, by Jon Wozencroft, includes an essay by Thierry Charollais, « Thomas Köner’s Novaya Zemlya: towards a metaphysical geography »… « Of course we find the unique Koneresque glowing drones that we know from his previous works. But we will also be touched by an unrevealed, barely perceptible sense of melody and harmony that Köner gradually developed since Kaamos (1998) and Nuuk (2004). » - Novaya Zemlya - also known in Dutch as Nova Zembla and in Norwegian as Gåselandet (lit. the Goose Land), is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean in the north of Russia and the extreme northeast of Europe, the easternmost point of Europe, lying at Cape Flissingsky on the northern island.

About Thomas Köner: Thomas Köner (b. 1965) is a pioneering multimedia artist whose main interest lies in combining visual and auditory experiences. Over his long, much celebrated career, he has worked between installation works, sound art, minimal soundscapes, and as one half of Porter Ricks. He attended music college in Dortmund and studied electronic music at the CEM-Studio in Arnhem. Until 1994 he worked in the film industry as editor and sound engineer. Thomas has extended his concept of time and sound colour to images, resulting in video installations, photography and net art. His point of departure was composition of sound in which aspects of a performance and visual language were gradually integrated. At first in the collaboration with film artist Jürgen Reble and the live performance Alchemie (1992). Following this, he started to compose film soundtracks and music to accompany historic silent films for the Louvre Museum and the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, who called him a major innovator in the contemporary music scene, as well as noted his collaborative practice which has led to his working with musicians, filmmakers and visual artists on installations and sound performances, and to his creation of six video works produced in two cycles, starting in 2003.

In the fall of 2010, the New Harbours Music Series collective has invited Eric Quach to perform at the Christ’s Church Cathedral, a 19th century historical building of architectural beauty in the center of the city of Hamilton, Canada. Without any preparation, he took the opportunity to record an improvised live set in front of an audience. Less than a year later, he returned for a second performance to complement his inceptive works. Mixed & edited as proper tracks during the winter & summer of 2012, both unique performances are respectfully presented on side A & B of a 12" vinyl.

Armed with his electric axe through a lethal arsenal of effect pedals & amplifiers, Quach brings out the demons by launching an ascent of drones into the throne. Once the uprise hits the cathedral walls, the propagating discord takes a life of their own and multiplies like evil spirits. As the struggle to tame and control them only make them grow louder and more powerful, the dark overwhelming waves of vibrations fill up the atmosphere like demonic clouds and come crashing down with an infernal intensity. Both side of the records present thisquietarmy’s attempts to cast out the spiritual entities that he creates, from the possessed holy church. Not for the faint of heart. BLUENECK are back with a new instrumental record they would love to present you before they’re releasing their 4th album with vocals in spring 2013. Composers and soundscapers like Brian Eno, Air, John Carpenter or Clint Mansell were a huge inspiration for this record. We recommend to listen to it with headphones to discover all the details. Anxiety Despair Languish is a summary of the whole heavy music panorama of our time. The result is the most ambitious work that they could make: an album for people who are not used to that kind of music, and for people who solely like that kind of music. They will tour with this record for 2 weeks from October 6th on.

After a longer break preparing a new album DOMINIC are back with a 10’’ featuring one brand new song and two they have rerecorded. This one’s limited to 300 copies and also won’t be repressed.

BLUENECK - EPILOGUE CD | LP | MP3

UK band Blueneck bring their trademark sense of melancholy mood and melody to a new instrumental project called « Epilogue », due for worldwide release on Denovali records in October 2012. Typically known for the distinctive haunting vocals of mainman Duncan Attwood, « Epilogue » takes a deliberately different approach. Inspired by Attwood’s recently commissioned solo work on soundtracks for independent films, not to mention the influence of inspirational composers and soundscapers such as BRIAN ENO, AIR, JOHN CARPENTER and CLINT MANSELL, this vocal-free release is the soundtrack to an (as yet) imaginary film. Epilogue" follows a trio of critically-acclaimed full length albums (2006’s Scars of the Midwest; 2009’s The Fallen Host ; 2011’s Repetitions).

Attwood says « « Epilogue » is intended as both the start and end of a number of distinct creative periods. It’s a bookend to our three previous full-length vocal albums, a statement of intent on our parallel soundtrack work, and a means of clearing our collective minds before we started work on our new recording. It’s our intention that the Blueneck you hear in the future will be markedly different to what you hear on this release ». The band are currently working on the release of their fourth full-length vocal album, as yet untitled, due for release on Denovali in 2013.

After the well-acclaimed studio albums « Earthen » (2007) and « Icon » (2011), and their latest live album « Live Recording 8.10.11 » (2012) LENTO are now presenting their brand new third full length called « Anxiety Despair Languish ».

The greatest ambition of this album is to keep alive the immediacy of “Earthen” with the violence and aggressiveness of “Icon”. However, Anxiety Despair Languish is something more respect Lento’s past albums: it tries to make a summary of the whole heavy music panorama of our time. The result is the most ambitious work that they could make: an album for people who are not used to that kind of music, and for people who solely like that kind of music.

The highly renowned loudness of their live performance has been reproduced in studio through the work of Lorenzo Stecconi and Matteo Spinazzè. Thirteen instrumental songs which does not sigh for the voice lack for a total running of 40 minutes and 50 seconds. After several intense years touring the whole europe between the 2007 and the 2012, this album represent a key moment in the band history.

Last year Dominic celebrated their 10-year anniversary as a band, and now they have begun the process of a new decade. Spring and summer 2012 has been spent in the studio where they have been working on their third studio album, and during the upcoming fall they will finish the recordings. Even if the album is still a few months away, there is already possibilities of a sneak listen of what to expect. The band will do a short tour in Germany in October and at the same time release a 10-inch with a brand new song, plus to re-recordings of two songs from their previous album Nord (2009). The new song is entitled Right For Me and will be out on a 10-inch which will be for sale from October 2012 on Denovali Records.

It’s been a while since we’ve written the last newsletter. So where to start now? Thanks a lot to everyone who joined this year’s Swingfest edition. We’ve really enjoyed the three days - we hope you’ve had a nice time as well. Second aspect: We’re sorry for the little delays regarding orders placed between the end of September and today.
